Grandin Responsible Care Program
FSNS C&A is proud to have partnered with Dr. Temple Grandin to create the Grandin Responsible Care Program. FSNS C&A values the lifelong commitment of Dr. Temple Grandin to improving the lives of animals raised for food. Both Dr. Grandin and FSNS C&A appreciate the critical role of responsible animal care as part of a sustainable food system. Recognizing this, FSNS C&A and Dr. Grandin believe that it is imperative that those involved in food animal production have the highest commitment to animal husbandry and demonstrate their commitment through such means as third-party verification of compliance with high standards. The role of independent, third-party verification is important in providing transparent assurance to consumers about practices used in animal production.
The Grandin Responsible Care Program was developed based on the idea that cattle are produced across the country by thousands of dedicated families but are concentrated in beef harvest facilities. While it would be a herculean task to monitor the husbandry practices at each production facility, ranging from family farms to large feedlots or dairies, sampling cattle at harvest facilities for objective indicators of substandard practices is a more practical approach. This standard is intended to be a data-driven standard for improved husbandry practices.
The core of this program is based on providing participating partners the tools required to properly monitor supplier performance related to animal husbandry, compiling data to identify suppliers where improvement is needed, and encouraging common sense husbandry improvements.
The Grandin Responsible Care Program requires participating partners to conduct internal audits of cattle received at the site to identify those suppliers which require improvements. Once identified, FSNS C&A livestock production experts will work with the supplier to address those concerns identified through internal audit data. The program also includes third-party verification at the harvest facilities participating in the Grandin Responsible Care Program.
